Each federal agency is responsible for meeting its FOIA responsibilities for its own records. Here are some of the most important ones that can be used to obtain/attain hard to get or sensitive information.

  • Archives.gov FOIA Page - The National Archives Freedom of Information Act Page
  • Dept. of Justice - FOIA page 
  • US Marshalls Freedom of Information Page includes an electronic reading room
  • Dept. of State - Electronic Reading Room this site provides information concerning State Department records and information access programs, including frequently requested FOIA documents, special collections, and administrative manuals.
  • Dept. of Defense - FOIA page Includes a FOIA handbook going over the basics of retrieving information and records from this department plus many other handy resources.
  • FBI - FOIA site This is one of the more thorough government FOI sites. Has a great electronic reading room with declassified publication on espionage, famous persons, the gangster era, unusual phenomena, violent crime and more.
  • FDA's FOIA page FDA's Electronic Freedom of Information Reading Room, mandated by the 1996 amendments to the act.
  • CIA FOIA - The CIA site provides the public with an overview of access to CIA information, including electronic access to previously released documents.
  • NSA FOIA - The goal of the NSA/CSS Freedom Of Information Act/Privacy Act Office is to release as much information as possible, consistent with the need to protect classified or sensitive information under the exemption provisions of these laws.
